Hello music lovers! The past three weeks have been a whirlwind of activity involving travel, ups and downs in society, and also some of life’s greatest moments. They have also been filled with discovering amazing new music, lyrics, and inspiration by some incredible artists along the way. I will be sharing some of these new artists with you in the coming weeks. But first, as a follow up to my previous blog post in response to recent tragic events, I thought I would share some of my go to songs during these challenging times both in my home country, and across the world. Their messages speak volumes making their language universal.
Although it is said that country music is the largest and most popular genre these days, perhaps it is not a genre you normally subscribe to, which is why I’m writing about this special song. Take a moment to really listen to what he’s saying, and you may just find yourself choked up a bit and inspired to start making a positive impact in every action you take. Tim McGraw’s Humble and Kind delivers an amazing message that if universally adopted would change the world instantaneously.
Don’t expect a free ride from no one, Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why…
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’, Always stay humble and kind.
When life has you feeling down and you need a pick me up, this song is not only catchy, it is uplifting and inspiring. Stop and take a moment to take in the message and groove to this great number from the amazing broadway musical Kinky Boots titled Raise You Up!
If you hit the dust, Let me raise you up.
When your bubble busts, Let me raise you up.
If your glitter rusts, Let me raise you up!
My next featured song has been a long time favorite of mine. In fact, there may have been a large gathering along the way where I stood on a chair and lead a sing along to this song hoping people would stop, look in the mirror, and be challenged to make a difference. Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror has been delivering this message to the listener since 1987.
If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself…And then make a change.
Jewish Reggae singer Matisyahu‘s song One Day seems more apropos to society, now more than ever as racial tension escalates. Open your heart and allow yourself to groove and be inspired by this hopeful message.
One day this all will change, Treat people the same
Stop with the violence, Down with the hate…
There is the age old lesson about being brave. And Sara Bareilles with her powerful vocals and lyrics, asks us to be Brave. And here is the thing about being brave, sometimes it means taking a leap of faith and going out of your comfort zone and accepting someone for who they are, regardless of their sexuality, religion, or race.
You can be amazing,You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast, Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up…
So there you have it. Five songs that I hope will fill you with peace, love, and inspiration. Here’s hoping that in the coming days, the conversation will shift towards a message that all lives matter. Life is short. Support each other and stop tearing each other down.
As always, to all of you music lovers, thanks for listening and inspiring. Thank you also to those that wrote and shared your feelings in response to my post In grief, I turn to music. Just know you are not alone. It always means a lot to me when I get to hear from readers all over the world in response to these features.
